Middle East Concern

Middle East Concern (MEC) is an association of Christian agencies and individuals that seeks to promote freedom of religion or belief in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

It was founded in 1991 in response to needs expressed by Christian leaders in this region.

While MEC firmly believes in freedom of religion or belief for all, for practical reasons our focus is on Christian communities in the MENA region where many face discrimination, marginalization or even persecution.

MEC works with a wide network of Church, CSO and media contacts to monitor freedom of religion or belief in the MENA region and, upon request by local communities, to provide assistance by:

  • Assisting victims in specific cases of persecution through providing advice and practical assistance, raising awareness, and through initiating advocacy through politicians and governments willing to petition MENA authorities
  • Challenging laws and policies by undertaking research-based advocacy on legal and structural issues that underlie discrimination or persecution
  • Empowering local communities in the MENA region through the provision of training in legal, practical and theological issues relevant to their lived experiences
